Belated Birthday Dinner

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

Jean told me that she was going to take me for a belated birthday dinner. I was so happy, she knows all of the good places here! And it lived up to my expectations completely!! It was wonderful, I recommend that you try it out if you are in the area. I had Turkish Gulosh, with mashed potatoes. I miss mashed potatoes… and some other dishes I cannot seem to find in Asia.

The atmosphere was also something worth noting here. It was a kind of dark bar, with a European look to it. Very small, but very nice. I will have to take the parents there when they return to Taiwan.

Thankyou so much for the wonderful gift Jean, I really appretiate it. I will remember that meal and the taste for the rest of my life. And everytime I think of it I will say "MMMMMM" like I often do when looking at the books of food I bought here.

Taichung, my home in Taiwan!!!

Monday, May 30th, 2005

Saturday 5.28 Jean and I went to Taichung. We decided to take Aloha and find out what Park was so set in his ways about. We immediately found out that it was really heaven on wheels. The seats are so comfortable, like a giant lounge chair. They have an individual tv for each seat so we were able to choose our channel. It was wonderful.

Then after getting to Taichung we took a bus to Dong Hai to see Art Street. That would be the romantic area with a lot of coffee shops. Before we got there, we got a drink. The people who worked there told us that the places we picked out in the magazine were not good, we should go to the place across the street as they are well-known for their Nio Ro Men. Let me just say that they must have some kind of a connection because the soup was horrible, Jean’s lunch wasn’t so bad but I couldn’t even eat mine. Before we went to the coffee place where I could eat, we stopped in at a coffee specialty store right next to the place we ate.

Jean wanted to buy a coffee maker. Jean, I tell you "You shouldn’t go there if you know nothing about coffee. You should come back when you get a coffee degree and know something." That is basically what the guy told her. So we left and headed to Art Street.

3 places banned in a matter of seconds. Never going to recommend that anyone goes there. So we ended up at one of the places in the magazine. It was wonderful.

We toured around, saw the first Rose House in Taiwan, where I ate lunch 5 years ago. It was nice. We also ate a snack at a Hakkanese place, it wasn’t bad. But this time Jean chose the perfect one and I had the not so good one!! Then I got something for mother, not going to say what… she can find out later and that store keeper helped us find a place to stay. Actually we just wanted a cheaper end place to stay, and she called a few people with no luck. So then she ended up calling one guy from the apartment complex and asked him if we could crash there. The guy did not move in yet so he let us. And he did not want any money in exchange. It was interesting. Thanks to that guy, we really appretiate it. Know he will never read this, but his kindness really speaks to the kindness I found in Taichung when I lived there for a year.

Art Street used to be the place where lovers would go to enjoy a nice meal. Nowadays though, it is more of a family place. The atmosphere is still calm and more peaceful than other places, but it has changed in the years since I last came.

Then off to the night market where we ate some wonderful small snacks. I also experienced heaven in a cup, carmel slushy with jen-ju. YUMMY. Then back to the room to rest up for the next day of adventures.

Sunday 5.29 we got up early and cleaned up. In an attempt to locate the place the nice lady mentioned to us, we stumbled upon a small bakery/breakfast place and decided to eat there. It was good. Jean found bread so she was happy. Then we left for Dong Hai University to see the lake and church.

When Uncle Stephen took me there I saw the church and some of the school  but not the lake. We found a place where they had wooden message boards where you could leave a message, so we created one. Will post it on here leter. The church was nice, but the lake was smaller than we expected. It was also not very clean, the lake and the area around it were dirty. Which amazed me because Dong Hai University’s campus is for the most part clean and well kept. So we sat for a moment and then left.

Off to the famous street in Taichung. When Uncle Stephen brought me to Providence University to learn Chinese we stopped by here to see. I had my first pearl experience there and I remember the place was beautiful. I still remember the exact place that I sat at. At night I think it would be a perfect place for lovers to go and have a cup of tea.

Although, during the day I do not think it is so wonderful. We had a dessert, of course Jean chose that!!! It was good. Then we went to the train station for the last part of our trip. We wanted to find 3 places in the magazine. We successfully found them and ate there. The first one was good, the second one we just got some for the bus ride and the excitement happened at the third. We wanted to eat the ice snack. The lady that worked there was what I would consider the ice nazi (!), she would insist that you order very quickly and if you did not order fast enough she would say "next." Her make-up was on so thick that I was wondering when her "face" would fall off or at least crack. And she told Jean that she shouldn’t have ice in hers. Jean you should really lern about ice before you order at that place!! So we banned that one as well.

Then we headed back to Taipei on Aloha, heaven on wheels. Although, if you take Aloha request the seats in the main part of the bus. If you sit in the back the seats are smaller and it will not be as comfortable. It would be a second class trip on Heaven instead of a first!!!!

More later.

Orange bookbag guy

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

There is one guy that I have been seeing everytime I travel to Taiwan. It started when I first came here about 5 years ago. I remember when I went to Providence University in Taichung, he was always there. I would see him whenever I went out.

He is from the US, I think, and he walks around with an orange bookbag that is always the same style. Every single time I come to Taiwan I see this guy, and now it is getting crazy. This trip I have seen him EVERYDAY. No matter where I go, he is always right there.

Talk about parralel lives. The next time I see this guy I am going to say hi and try to figure out why we keep on running into each other like that. I just saw him walk out of the coffee shop across the street from where I am right now. It is kind of ironic and scary.

HELLO!!!

For anyone who is reading this, please send a message and say hi. You can respond and make a comment to my blogs. It is very easy!!! I would like to hear from you. And Jean, I won’t kick you off for not posting anything.

The “Disease”

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

Wednesday 5.25 I went to the Taipei Train Station to meet Giles. He is a Canadian/Taiwanese who is now in Taiwan for a short period of time. We had a conversation all about how he is sick of Taiwan. Amazing how he hates Taiwan and I love it.

Then Jean and Keith saved me and we went for dinner. We had a traditional meal, my favorite and then Jean and I hung out chatting for the rest of the night. Know I will miss that when I go back to Korea.

Thursday 5.26 was one of the most interesting days I’ve had in Taiwan ever. I was walking to the subway station to go to Shi Da Night Market. I was trying to go to a new subway station to see if it was closer than the other one. On the way there 4 Taiwanese, all at different times, stopped me and asked me about the "black dots" on my face. I was shocked, thinking that I had missed something when I left the house. Maybe there are bug bites there or something. But the way they were talking it was a "disease" although I couldn’t understand the name of my sickness.

When I couldn’t understand the exact name of my sickness, they asked me if I was really a Taiwanese. Shocking that they thought I was a Taiwanese. They told me that they would take me to their teacher and he could remove it. Think they were on their way to some class they were having. Hmmm… Want to know what the black diseased dots were???

Freckles!!!!!!!! I think that they are perfectly normal for an American at least. So I think I will keep the disease and the strange story of how some Taiwanese thought it was necessary to warn me of them. Laughing and shocked inside now. I’m going to avoid the block that I encountered 4 Taiwanese that felt the need to point that out.

My weekend

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Friday 5.20 Jean and I met in the coffee shop after her work. We went for dinner in Shi Da Night Market. Then we spent the evening in the coffee shop playing online. After that Giles met us and we had a drink. It was interesting. My first time drinking in Taipei and my first all nighter in Taiwan!!! We talked a lot, actually he talked a lot and poor Jean and I listened. Wow, he LOVES to talk. Finally around 8 am we went back home after eating breakfast and eating some pudding. There is one kind of pudding in Taiwan that is awsome, you can not find it anywhere else. Poor Jean had been in the dark about this kind of pudding even though she has lived in Taiwan for many years! I had a quick nap and then met Jean.

Saturday 5.21 Jean and I went to visit Uncle Kuo-Chang. We had to figure out which bus to take to get there. It was a very nice visit, and I now know how to get there by myself. Uncle wanted to see Dennis, as Denis is his favorite. But we had a nice visit.

Then Sunday 5.22 Jean and I went to YamingShan where we had a nice walk and saw some butterflies. How romantic, if only we had our guys to share it with us!! Then we headed back to Taipei and met 2 of her friends.

A very nice weekend. Always fun.

Newspaper Thief

Friday, May 20th, 2005

All during this trip to Taiwan Jean has been so kind. She lent me her labtop to use for the 3 weeks, she has been taking me to all of my favorite restaurants and helping me buy jen ju drinks. Today Jean gave me an English newspaper. She said that she confiscated the paper from work. So nice of her. ALthough there is an ulterior motive to this all. I believe she would like for me to move to Taiwan. I wouldn’t complain if that happened!!!!!

Those are my thoughts for the day.

Life

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

Jean and I are now in the coffe shop now. Jean is suppose to be studying but instead she is talking to me. Seems like we have not seen each other in a very long time and yet, like we never left each other. If only all friends could be like that .

"How do I live without you?
I want to know,
How do I breathe without you?
If you ever go,
How do I ever, ever survive?
How do I, how do I, oh how do I live?
Without you,
There’d be no sun in my sky,
There would be no love in my life,
There’d be no world left for me.
And I,
Baby I don’t know what I would do,
I’d be lost if I lost you,
If you ever leave,
Baby you would take away everything good in my life,
And tell me now"

Later,
